Pigmentation/Sun Damage & Age Spots

Photo facials are great for age prevention. Increases collagen production and evens skin tone.

Beneath the Surface: The Art of Treating Hyperpigmentation at Every Depth

Uneven skin tone is one of the most common skin concerns and can show up in many different ways, from sun spots and freckles to stubborn acne marks or melasma. Each of these types tells a different story in your skin, whether it's the result of UV exposure, hormonal changes, or past trauma resulting in inflammation.

At Freedom Medi-Spa, we take a personalized approach to pigmentation correction using advanced lasers, targeted peels, and clinical skincare to fade discolouration and reveal a brighter, more luminous you.

Brown Spots | Melasma | Freckles

Brown Spots

Vary in size and usually appear on the face, hands, shoulders and arms, areas most exposed to the sun. Age spots are very common in adults older than age 50.

Melasma

Is a common skin condition of adults in which light to dark brown or greyish pigmentation develops, mainly on the face.

Freckles

Are flat, tanned circular spots that may develop on sun-exposed skin after repeated exposure to sunlight.

Understanding the Depth of Pigment: Epidermal vs. Dermal Hyperpigmentation

When it comes to hyperpigmentation, not all dark spots exist at the same level of the skin. Epidermal pigmentation sits closer to the surface, within the top layer of the skin. It often appears as lighter brown spots or patches and is typically caused by sun exposure or post-acne marks (PIH). These types of pigment usually respond well to chemical peels, IPL (Photo Facial) treatments, and brightening ingredients. Dermal pigmentation, on the other hand, lies deeper in the skin’s second layer, making it more resistant to topical treatments alone.

At Freedom Medi-Spa, we determine the depth of your pigmentation and create a tailored treatment plan. This plan combines cutting-edge technologies with medical-grade skincare to safely lift pigment from every layer, revealing a more even, radiant complexion.

Important Notes for Topical Treatments
  • Hydroquinone: Very effective, but best used short-term (3–6 months)
  • Retinoids: Increase cell turnover; ideal for multiple types of pigmentation
  • Vitamin C: Antioxidant that brightens skin and inhibits melanin production
  • Niacinamide: Gentle and suitable for all skin types; helps prevent pigment transfer
  • Tranexamic (appears cut off in your source)
